It is Joe's last masterful move, knowing he is doomed: to go on a journey with his son, Woelie. To get to know each other. To help Woelie stand on his own two feet. To say goodbye.

Months later, Woelie writes down their story. Searching for the right beginning, he addresses the reader directly and draws them into his moving tale.

Woelie had been home for months when his father fell ill. Because that was easier than going to school, where he had something to explain for the umpteenth time. Years earlier, his mother was admitted to an institution, and since then, he and his dad, Joe, have run a typical all-male household, where more is left unsaid than spoken.

At home, Woelie stares at a DVD of train journeys through Europe all day, keeping the rest of the world out. It's the only way he can cope.

Until fate strikes. During a final unforgettable Rail Away tour through Europe, the bond between Woelie and Joe grows stronger and stronger. And as their farewell approaches, they get to know themselves, each other, and the world.
