Summary:

How World War I comes very, very close for a girl from the 21st century.

Luka, almost eighteen, beautiful and headstrong, spends the summer with her aunt. She's had enough of her parents, for whom everything revolves around money and appearances. But her peace is disturbed by William, who visits her on his way to Belgium. William, the English boy she fell in love with last year, but who betrayed her. Yet something about William continues to attract her. And when Luka hears that he is going to Ypres to research the gas attacks in World War I, an irresistible urge to go with him overcomes her. When her aunt then gives her a box of letters that a soldier at the front in Ypres wrote to his fiancée in 1914, developments accelerate. Luka appears to know more about this soldier than she could possibly know. And then there's that boy with the red hair who seems to follow her everywhere - and who hasn't aged in fifteen years. In Ypres, Luka and William discover things about themselves and each other that will change their lives forever.
